Origin & History
A Working Breed Born in Belgium
The Belgian Malinois takes its name from the city of Malines (Mechelen), Belgium, where the breed was developed in the late nineteenth century as one of four varieties of Belgian Shepherd. Bred originally for herding, the Malinois was valued for its intelligence, stamina, and close working relationship with its handler.
That same drive and trainability later made the breed a natural fit for police, military, and protection work, where the Malinois remains one of the most widely relied-upon working dogs in the world today.
The herding instinct hasn’t disappeared — it shows up as focus, athleticism, and a strong desire to have a job. Understanding that history is part of understanding what a Malinois needs from daily life.
